Interior Design Trends To Avoid

Now, let’s dive into some of the home decor trends you my want to avoid in 2025.

1. All Grey Everything

Don’t

We are all guilty of it, painting our rooms a shade of grey (Agreeable grey). In 2025, try to avoid that all grey everything when it comes to home decor to prevent your home from feeling outdated and builder grade.

Do

Keep some of your grey home decor and mix it in with some neutral toned decor pieces. In 2025, try incorporating some more whites, greens, and beige colors to bring in some warmth into your home.

BEST PAINT COLORS 2025:

  • Sherwin Williams Pure White
  • Sherwin Williams Snowbound
  • Sherwin Williams Alabaster
  • Sherwin Williams Alapaca
  • Sherwin Williams Sealskin

2. Mirrored Furniture

Don’t

That glamorous mirrored furniture had a time and place and 2025 may not be it. Not only is mirrored furniture a pain to clean, it can make a space look tacky and cold.

Do

Make sure that you do have mirrors in your home because they can help reflect and bring in some natural light to make your space feel larger. Instead of having mirrored furniture, try hanging mirrors on the walls.

TIP: Sell your old furniture or decor pieces on Facebook Marketplace and use that money towards new home decor purchases.

3. Wall Art With Words

Don’t

Stop buying wall art that has cheesy quotes about drinking or tacky inspirational quotes in 2025.

Do

This trend is one that you may just want to avoid all together, but if you really love this trend, try Etsy for wall art that has aesthetic and modern fonts.

4. Geometric Patterns

Don’t

The black and white geometric rugs, tapestries, and pillow covers can sometimes be too busy and bold for a room which is why we say to avoid them in 2025.

Do

It’s ok to have some pattern in your home decor, but try to avoid those harsh black and white hexagons and opt for a softer print in a less harsh pattern.

5. White Subway Tile

Don’t

Try to stay away from the predictable and basic white subway tile in your kitchen and bathrooms in 2025. Yes these tiles are classic, but they can be a little boring and overly done in the past few years.

Do

If you like the white subway tile, try laying it vertically instead of horizontal for a trendy and fresh take on this look. You can even opt for a matte or textured version of these tiles to bring some visual interest to your space. If you already have these tiles, consider painting them to spruce them up.

6. Farmhouse Style

Don’t

There was a time when we all were guilty of loving that Fixer Upper Farmhouse rustic look in our homes. The shiplap walls, the rustic furniture, and farm like decor is gorgeous, but it is more suitable for someone who lives on a farm. This is a home decor trend that you may want to avoid in 2025 to set your home apart from the rest.

Do

Turn your farmhouse into a modern one by eliminating some of those more rustic home decor pieces like the “fresh eggs sign” or shiplap walls. Instead paint your shiplap a rich green color and add some moody lighting in the room to warm it up.

7. An All White Kitchen

Don’t

An all white kitchen can sometimes feel too sterile and not so homey which is why we suggest maybe to pass on this trend if possible.

Do

Add some warmth to your kitchen by painting your cabinets a warmer shade of white and adding in some wooden shelving or a neutral colored backsplash.

8. Microwave Over Stove

Don’t

In 2025, you will see less kitchens that have a microwave over the stove. Even though it is a convenient location to hang your microwave, it takes away from the design element of the kitchen.

Do

If you have the luxury of designing your own kitchen or remodeling your current kitchen, opt for a vent hood above your stove and put your microwave in a hidden cabinet or in the pantry.

9. Matching Furniture Sets

Don’t

Matching furniture sets can be convenient, affordable, and just an easy way to buy furniture. The downside to these matching sets is that it makes your home feel like a furniture store and makes the room feel less personal.

Do

For a more lived in look, try choosing only matching nightstands in the bedroom. The headboard and dresser should have a similar color palette and style but be from a different line to avoid the room being too matchy.

10. Dark Granite In Kitchens

Don’t

Dark granite countertops were such a popular trend in the early 2000’s and it is now safe to say that trend has come to an end.

Do

If you like the dark countertop look, opt for a dark soapstone or a black quartz to recreate a modern version of this old trend.

11. Letters With Your Initial

Don’t

Monogram wall initials were the coolest thing to have on your walls in the early 2000’s, but now not so much.

Do

Instead of hanging your initials on you walls, search for cute ways to add your initials into your home decor with some monogrammed towels, Christmas stockings, or even on your clothing.

12. Grey Washed Plank Floors

Don’t

Grey washed floors were a quick trend that was overdone along with the grey paint on the walls. In 2025, avoid these floors to prevent your house from having too much of that outdated grey decor.

Do

If possible, choose a dark walnut floor or a white oak floor for a flooring option that is modern and timeless. If you don’t have the luxury of changing your flooring, paint the walls in your room a fresh coat of white to avoid too much grey in the home.

13. Barn Doors

Don’t

Barn doors can be a great way to add privacy without taking up too much space in the home, but they tend to lean more farmhouse which is a home decor style that is fading away.

Do

Opt for a glass modern barn door that allows natural light into the room and doesn’t look so rustic.

TRY THIS INSTEAD:

14. Minimalistic Decor

Don’t

Minimalistic home decor (like Kim K’s home) can feel a little too sterile and cold. The lack of color and warmth doesn’t give your home a cozy feel.

Do

Living minimalistic is great because it can help keep your home clutter free! If you like this style, just opt for warm decor pieces in beiges, browns, and off white tones. Add some greenery for subtle pops of color in your home.

15. Heavy Curtains and Window Treatments

Don’t

Hanging blackout curtains on your windows can actually make the windows get lost in their window treatments and block sunlight from coming in.

Do

Try not to put anything on your windows to allow the natural light in and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. If you want some privacy, opt for a light weight shade or some sheer curtains to make your home feel open and inviting.

16. Animal Print Decor

Don’t

The zebra print chairs, area rugs, and pillows can be a fun home decor moment, but they can make the room feel alittle outdated.

Do

Keep the animal print to a minimum when it comes to home decor. Instead, opt for more subtle patterns like florals.

TRY THIS INSTEAD:

17. Boob Light

Don’t

These boobs lights are a builder grade lighting option that are underwhelming and just boring.

Do

You can easily swap out these light fixtures for a more modern flush mount or semi flush mount for a fresh and modern look in your home.
